A Season of Listening, Learning, and Growing Together

September 15, 2025News

Dear friends of the New Opportunity School for Women,

When a woman is given the tools to rise, a whole community is lifted. I’ve seen that truth in the steady dedication of our staff and interns, and in the faithful generosity of donors and partners who believe in Appalachian women. My name is Angel Short, and I’m honored to join you as Executive Director.

Over the past weeks, I’ve been listening and learning from our dedicated staff and interns to hear where we’ve been and where we must go next. I’ve heard about the courage it takes to start again, the relief of being truly seen, and the pride of a first paycheck, a new credential, a healed relationship. These stories don’t just inspire me; they set our course.

Where we are now

  • Our mission remains steady: to empower underresourced Appalachian women through education and support. We will continue to be a place of belonging and momentum, where women are equipped with skills, confidence, and a community that doesn’t let go.
  • Our team is small but mighty: focused on thoughtful, high-impact work with clear outcomes, graduate stories, and measurable progress you can see and trust.
  • Our priorities this season are simple and strong: listen and build relationships; assess and communicate clearly; align our efforts and set the stage for growth.

Where we’re going

In the months ahead, we will:

  • Strengthen graduate support with practical resources and mentors who walk beside our women as they step into work, education, and leadership.
  • Share results regularly so you know exactly how your partnership is changing lives and strengthening Appalachian communities.
  • Invite more people into this mission because the work is bigger than any one of us and more powerful when we do it together.

How you can be part of this moment

  • Graduates: Tell us what would help you most right now. Your voice directs our action.
  • Donors or partners: Your investment is a key that opens doors. Help us expand access, add programs, and meet women where they are.
  • Friends new to NOSW: Welcome. There’s a place for you here as a supporter, volunteer, employer partner, or ambassador.

Some things won’t change. NOSW will remain a steady hand and a brave space. A place where women rebuild confidence, sharpen skills, and claim their futures. What will change is how far our impact reaches when we move in step – listening, aligning, and acting with purpose.

Thank you for the many ways you show up for this mission through your generosity, your time, and your belief in Appalachian women. I’m eager to meet you, learn from you, and work alongside you.

With gratitude and resolve,

Angel Short
